Parakoimomenos

Parakoimomenos
The imperial chamberlain who guarded the emperor's (q.v.) bedchamber. Usually parakoimomenoi were eunuchs (q.v.), but sometimes not, as in the case of the future emperor Basil I (q.v.), appointed to the post by Michael III (q.v.). In the 10th century it became an extremely powerful office. For example, Joseph Bringas (q.v.) administered the empire as parakoimomenos of Romanos II (q.v.).
